Sex Offense Bills Proposed

2005-07-07

Sen. Joe Carraro, R-Albuquerque, has introduced two bills that would toughen regulations for sex offenders.
The first measure, SB55, would require sex offenders who move to or visit New Mexico to register with the local county sheriff within 24 hours.
The second bill, SB42, calls for an involuntary commitment in a mental hospital for convicted sex offenders if they are deemed a threat to society by a parole board, psychiatric evaluation and state District Court decision. The offender would not be released until rehabilitated, according to Carraro's proposal.
The estimated cost for the program next fiscal year would be more than $11 million.
