Panel Approves Cabinet-Level Education Post
2005-07-07
A proposal to create a cabinet-level secretary of education in New Mexico cleared an initial legislative hurdle on Wednesday.
The Senate Rules Committee approved the proposal 5-3 and forwarded it to the Education Committee for consideration.
The proposal by Sen. Joseph Carraro, R-Albuquerque, would change the state constitution to have the governor appoint a secretary of education, who would be in charge of the Department of Education.
Currently, the state Board of Education selects the state superintendent of public instruction.
The proposal would abolish the 15-member Board of Education and have the governor appoint an advisory board of education. Currently, 10 board members are elected and five are appointed by the governor.
